Historic preservation and adaptive reuse have sensitively restored an
historic New England treasure. The Old Gurley Tavern, located in Chaplin,
Connecticut, is approaching the completion of its extensive restoration project. Aileen Barth and her husband, Albert Bond, purchased the tavern in
April of 1999. With businesses in both residential design and construction,
their collective expertise has returned this unique building to its original vision of 1822. This multi-faceted preservation project will restore both
structure and function of the Old Gurley Tavern as it will open as a Country Inn.
Northeastern Connecticut is known as the "Quiet Corner," comprised of small
New England towns left untouched by urban sprawl. History has been preserved in both the architecture and the landscape. The Old Gurley Tavern epitomizes
high Federal style with elaborate cornices and fenestration on the facade, period furnishings within gracious rooms and manicured lawns and rose
gardens. According to Aileen Barth, "Given its provenance, the Old Gurley
Tavern contributes to the historical character and architectural design of
the area. Our primary interest was to preserve the Tavern's original
character while sensitively incorporating the accoutrements of modern
luxury." In the practice of historic preservation, careful documentation was
made of the phased restoration project. "We were first attracted to the
building by its wide chestnut floor boards, intricate stenciling, classic
Palladian window, and six fireplaces. The Tavern presented itself as a
unique restoration opportunity. We intend to share the beauty and history of the Old Gurley Tavern as a Country Inn." |
